The 1st of many symptoms of bad gas caps is likely going to be a loose gas cap or a gas cap that will not tighten completely. This may not seem significant at first, but if it’s not completely sealed then the fuel system can be exposed to dirt and grime. If the gas cap is not fitting properly, try checking the gasket to be sure it isn’t brittle or missing. If you drive an old vehicle, be sure the metal gas cap is not damaged or bent. Both a bad seal or bent gas cap can cause gas cap problems and might even require buying a replacement from the manufacturer.
What concerns can a non-secure gas cap cause? How about a check engine light just for starters? A loose gas cap will not only let in dirt and grime, but it can also allow fuel vapors to escape the fuel tank. These gasoline vapors can trigger an error in the emissions system, which would light up the check engine light. Dirt and Grime that gets into the fuel tank could also contaminate fuel injectors. The biggest indicator of a faulty gas cap is the smell of gasoline in your car.
These days you may see no gas cap on new cars, but if your vehicle wasn’t made with a capless fuel filler, you shouldn’t drive without a gas cap installed. If your car is older, there is a possibility that fuel could slosh out from the gas tank during hard cornering or other spirited driving. If you drive without a gas cap, it can lead to poor fuel economy because the gas may evaporate without the correct seal on the tank. The smell is the gasoline evaporating from your gas tank, which can cause reduced fuel economy.
